In the Spring of 2019, the Canadian Government took important steps to protect the health of the general public by updating the Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines. These changes included (but were not limited to) decreasing the maximum acceptable concentration (MAC) of lead in drinking water sources from 0.010 mg/L (10 ppb) to 0.005 mg/L (5 ppb) and specifying the location of measurement as at the tap. Municipalities continue to be diligent in monitoring source water for contamination, and now the public and private sector will share in this responsibility by ensuring the water that comes out of their tap(s) is safe.
In response to these changes, the Alberta government issued a guidance document to assist municipalities in developing comprehensive monitoring programs for lead in drinking water, which can be found here.
