Radiation Exposure

Posted on April 2, 2011

A lot of people have been asking us lately about radiation exposure locally along the West Coast of Canada and should they be concerned.  To quickly answer, no you should not be worried about the “nuclear fallout” in North America from what is happening in Japan. It is a great time to evaluate some of the potential hazardous exposures around you and your family and to be prepared in emergency situations. Do you have an emergency kit prepared for you and your family with at least 3 days worth of supplies until emergency responders would reach you in a large scale disaster? Are you aware of local resources, disaster plans, local emergency services? Are you properly covered with insurance for various likely or unlikely situations occurring?

Radon is a possible local source of radiation (click here to read more) which a lot of people are unaware of and should likely be investigated further to ensure you are not unnecessarily exposed. Asbestos or mould exposure are other potential risks around us that should be considered and mitigated against. Also, testing your drinking water well regularly (click here for more information) or understanding potential air contaminants (click here for more information) are other issues worth learning about and understanding your potential risks around you.

We should not be fearful about the things around us that can impact our health, but we can all do a little more to understand the potential hazards and take reasonable steps to mitigate our chances of being negatively affected by them. Please contact us anytime to discuss this or any other chemistry related issues that you may be concerned about.
